Learning how to balance nutrition and exercise with busy schedules
College is an exciting and transformative time, but with late-night study sessions, social events, and tight schedules, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be challenging. However, by prioritizing nutrition and regular exercise, you can feel your best and perform optimally in both academics and social life.
Nutrition
Your diet plays a crucial role in maintaining energy levels and overall well-being. To eat healthy in college, plan your meals by incorporating proteins, healthy fats, and veggies. Snack smart by avoiding options filled with processed sugars and opting for healthier snacks like fruits, veggies, or crackers instead. Limiting processed foods and choosing whole-food-based meals when possible can significantly improve your diet. Staying hydrated is essential, so carry a water bottle to ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day.
Exercise
With a busy schedule, it can be tough to fit exercise into your day, but consistency is key to maintaining good health. According to the CDC, it is recommended to do about 150 minutes of regular exercise per week, which is about 30 minutes per day for five days a week! Utilize campus facilities, such as our Baun Fitness Center that is free for students, and schedule workouts between classes. Finding a workout buddy can make fitness more enjoyable and help keep you accountable. Joining a fitness club or intramural sport or even taking classes at the gym is another great way to stay active while also socializing and relieving stress. If you do not have time for the gym, incorporate daily movement by walking to class, taking the stairs, or doing short workouts in your room.
Balance
Staying healthy in college is not just about diet and exercise—it is about balance. Aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night to help with memory retention and energy levels. Managing stress is crucial, and activities like meditation, journaling, or engaging in hobbies can help keep stress levels in check. You do not have to give up your favorite foods or fun social events, but try to make mindful choices and find a balance that works for you. A healthy college lifestyle is achievable with a bit of planning and dedication. By making small, consistent choices to prioritize nutrition, fitness, and overall well-being, you will set yourself up for success both academically and personally.
