Movies for Free? Say Less!

Tiger TV brings your favorite movies and TV shows to the Pacific campus.

Once again it is that time of the year when finals are looming over all of our shoulders and sleep has become but a suggestion.  With prices increasing on the major streaming platforms and issues of not being in the same household as the account holder, it can be difficult and downright frustrating to get your favorite rom-coms or thrillers at the time when you may need them most.

And that is where Tiger TV swoops in to save the day.  Tiger TV is a part of Swank Motion Pictures, a streaming platform that grants access to many movies and TV shows.  Swank licenses movies directly with the biggest studios in Hollywood. Through this platform you can have access to box-office hits like Barbie or one of the Marvel Avengers movies, family favorites like Wall-e or How to Train Your Dragon, beloved classics like Hairspray or The Godfather.  If movies are not really your thing then you can also find TV shows like Breaking Bad, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, or even iCarly.

The best part? It is completely free!  The caveat? The service can only be accessed via PacificNet WiFi routers, meaning you must be using the University’s WiFi and unfortunately it is unusable when you are not on-campus.  To start watching, simply go to your MyPacific page, type “Tiger TV” into the search bar, and then settle down with your favorite movie snack!

Even if you do not have the time to fully stop studying or working to watch a movie, having background noise in the form of your favorite movie, that you have watched a thousand times and could quote in your sleep, can help keep those studying sessions a little less tedious.  I know I personally work better with background noise that is predictable, and noticing that the movie ended signals to me that it may be time for a quick break.

For instance, one of my all-time favorite movies I often find myself returning to is Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo Dicaprio.  This science-fiction and action movie revolves around the concept of being able to steal secrets directly from a person’s subconscious via dream-sharing technology, but with a personal story of the main protagonist Dom Cobb simultaneously unfolding.  Full of action and mind-bending ideas while also being backed with a phenomenal soundtrack by Hans Zimmer makes this movie a must-watch for me, or rather a must-rewatch.

Another recommendation I have is 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.  This rom-com is a clever modernized retelling of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, taking the well-known play to the setting of “Padua High School” and reframing Katherine “Kate” Minola and Petruchio as an enemies-to-lover trope that pairs together a“bad boy” and seemingly cynical and antisocial female lead.  Full of silly jokes, cheesy romantic moments, and a message about the dangers of peer pressure, this is a definite watch for my fellow rom-com lovers!
