2024 Summer GE Classes at San Joaquin Delta College

Former student Julian Leal reviews a collection of courses that transfer from Stockton’s community college.

San Joaquin Delta College is Stockton’s community college of choice. Just over a mile north of the University of the Pacific, it offers hundreds of courses on its central campus with online and late-start options available. Before coming to Pacific, I participated in its dual enrollment program, enabling me to take college courses throughout high school. Now, I would like to highlight some of the transferable classes I took for any students interested in fulfilling GE requirements over the summer, specifically in the humanities. All of the courses are open for the Summer 2024 semester.

I reflected upon classes that fulfill the following Areas of Inquiry in the University of the Pacific’s General Education Program:

  • Artistic Process & Creation

  • Civic & Global Responsibility

  • Language & Narratives

  • Social Inquiry

Artistic Process and Creation

ART 6: 2D Design & Color (3 units)

ART 6 is a great option for anyone interested in visual art and understanding the fundamentals of design. Topics range from color theory to different styles of painting and are suited to artists of all skill levels. Students build portfolios through various art projects, such as a self-portrait collage. This course is an asset to anyone planning to complete future visual work, whether a prospective architect, graphic designer, or baker.

  • Pacific equivalent = ARTS 007: Two-Dimensional Design & Color (4 units)

  • Sections of ART 6 are fully online.

  • Start date: June 10

Civic & Global Responsibility

POLSC 1: American Government and Institutions (3 units)

POLSC 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of American government as applied to different levels. Students reflect on the nature of American democracy and participate in discussions about current political issues. This is a course for those who seek to deepen their understanding of the governmental systems that influence their everyday lives.

  • Pacific equivalent = POLS 041: U.S. Government and Politics (4 units)

  • Sections of POLSC 1 are fully online.

  • Start dates: May 27, June 10, June 24, July 8

Language & Narratives

COM ST 1A: Public Speaking (3 units)

Public Speaking is an essential course to the college academic experience. It prepares students with the skills needed to develop and conduct a speech as well as ways to approach different speech conflicts. The work in COM ST 1A is primarily composed of speeches and outlines, such as an assignment where students deliver a speech while acting as a circus performer. Although the class is presentation-heavy, it is a great way to introduce to students how to best communicate with others in academic settings and every interaction beyond.

  • Pacific equivalent = COMM 027: Public Speaking (3 units)

  • Sections of COM ST 1A are fully online.

  • Start dates: May 27, June 10, June 24

Social Inquiry

SOCIO 1A: Introduction to Sociology (3 units)

SOCIO 1A explores social structures, dynamics, and all other factors that construct human society. Students apply theoretical perspectives to current social issues to better understand how past social science research fits into modern life. This class is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the determinants of one’s social status and how we navigate social development.

  • Pacific equivalent = SOCI 051: Introduction to Sociology (4 units)

  • Sections of SOCIO 1A are fully online.

  • Start dates: May 27, June 10, June 24

I will also provide descriptions of the classes I plan on taking at Delta this summer that fulfill the following two Areas of Inquiry:

  • Scientific Inquiry

  • World Perspectives & Ethics

Scientific Inquiry

FCS 6: Nutrition (3 units)

  • Pacific equivalent = HESP 045: Nutrition for Health (4 units)

  • Sections of FCS 6 are fully online.

  • Start dates: May 27, June 10

“This course presents scientific concepts of nutrition related to the function of nutrients in basic life processes and current health issues with emphasis on individual needs. Emphasis is given to the role of food choices and physical activity on health, body weight, and risk of disease. Students undertake a self-study of personal dietary intake and habits compared to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” (2023-2024 San Joaquin Delta College Catalog)

World Perspectives & Ethics

CIVIL 3: Autobiography of Civilization (3 units)

  • Pacific equivalent = INTL TLD

  • Sections of HUM/CIVIL 3 are fully online.

  • Start dates: June 10, June 24

“This course is a survey of the artistic traditions of our Western cultural heritage. The arts including painting, sculpture, architecture, music, dance, drama, and literature are studied as vehicles in the search for meaning and value from the ancient world to modern times.” (2023-2024 San Joaquin Delta College Catalog)
